Newborn babiesrequire more sleep than adults, so their sleep cycles are longer. On average, they need at least 16 hours of sleep a day. However, the 16 hours will be broken up by frequent naps.
Baby sleep cycles may not always follow the patterns parents expect. First, newborns will not sleep for 16 hours without waking up. They will require frequent feedings and changes. In addition, they tend to sleep for two to three hours stretches, and wake up often.
Sleep Rescue understands that parents often feel frustrated because baby sleep cycles vary greatly from the adult versions. Young babies will not sleep for eight hours straight like an adult. Instead, you need to be prepared for frequent interruptions.
It is important to understand each child may develop a unique sleep cycle. Some babies will sleep longer at night while others will sleep for shorter stretches of time.
The baby experiences a similar cycle of light sleep, deep sleep and REM sleep that can be seen in adults. However, quiet sleep tends to last for a shorter period of time among babies.
Many parents ask Sleep Rescue if babies dream. They are surprised to learn that they can dream for eight hours of their day, and this is much longer than adults.
At Sleep Rescue, we work with parents, so they can fully understand their children's sleep cycles. Then, we help them find the right balance, so their babies will sleep on their own without needing a parent to rock them, pat them, feed them or carry them.
