Baby Sleep Patterns

Connect With Us

Parents who understand a baby's sleep pattern have an advantage. They will recognize normal and abnormal patterns, and they can request help if necessary.

A newborn needs an average of 16 hours of sleep a day. Parents need to remember that it is normal for the baby to wake up frequently and require feedings. They also have to remember that the pattern of short bursts of sleep followed by wakefulness is normal for a newborn.

Once a child has reached six weeks, baby sleep patterns begin to change. Many babies begin to sleep longer at night. Their naps may become shorter during the day. At this stage, it is important to make sure routines are being followed. Sleep Rescue warns parents that rocking a child will become a pattern he or she expects to continue for months. You must be careful about the habits you form.

As babies grow, their sleep patterns will change

At 3 months, babies are still in need of at least 15 hours of sleep a day. Naps continue to be an important part of the baby sleep cycle. In addition, many children are already set in their ways and have routines they prefer at this age.

At 4 to 6 months, babies may be capable to sleep through a night without waking up. Of course, each child's development will vary, and some will still have problems with this. Routines become even more important at this stage, and Sleep Rescue can help.

At 6 months, the amount of time babies need to sleep is reduced to 14 hours. Many children begin to change their nap patterns. They may have fewer naps, but they will last longer. Babies should be sleeping through the night. However, many parents learn this does not always happen.

At 9 months, the amount of time babies need to sleep does not change. Most babies should be sleeping through the night at this point. It may be necessary to try to make sure this is happening with your child. Some parents find success by gradually stopping feedings at night.

Up to the age of 12 months, your baby's sleep patterns may continue to change. Routines are still a crucial part of keeping your sanity and getting enough sleep. Sleep Rescue is here to help you with any problems you may experience.
